Zakary Foulkes etched his name in the record books after making his Test debut against Zimbabwe as New Zealand created history in the second Test of a two-match series at the Queens Park Stadium in Bulawayo by a margin of an innings and 359 runs.
Foulkes was not part of New Zealand’s original squad, but was called up after the first Test following an injury to Nathan Smith. With Will O’Rourkee also missing out due to a fitness-related issue, Foulkes was included in the playing XI as three players made their maiden Test appearance against the Black Caps, with Jacob Duffy and Matthew Fisher also playing red-ball cricket at the international level for the first time.
Zakary Foulkes Creates History
Foulkes left an instant impression on his Test debut with figures of 9/75 across the two innings, which are the best by a New Zealand bowler on their Test debut, breaking a record set by Rourkee last year against South Africa at Hamilton after taking nine wickets in the match while conceding 93 runs.
Foulkes took four wickets in the first innings while conceding 38 runs, and took a five-wicket haul in the second outing with figures of 5/37.
Overall, Foulkes is the 41st player to take four-wicket hauls on their debut Test match, but only the third player from New Zealand to achieve the feat after Rourkee and Mark Craig.
Among the rare list of 41 bowlers to achieve the unique feat, Foulkes’ match average is the second-best in history and are top of the list in the last century.
