Jonas Brothers Reunion Was ‘Healing’ and an ‘Instant Yes’

For Demi Lovato, reuniting with the Jonas Brothers at the kickoff show for the band’s 20th anniversary tour was “an instant yes.” The former Disney stars performed together for the first time in over a decade at East Rutherford, N.J.’s MetLife Stadium on Sunday night, singing their “Camp Rock” hits “This Is Me” and “Wouldn’t Change a Thing.”

In a new interview on the “Chicks in the Office” podcast, Lovato said Joe Jonas — whom she dated in 2010 while they were both on Disney Channel — asked her last week if she’d come on stage with them as a surprise guest.

“[He] was like, ‘Hey, what are you doing next weekend on the 10th? We would love to have you come and perform “This Is Me” and “Wouldn’t Change a Thing.” You’ve been a huge part of our journey and vice versa … This show is really important to us and we would love to have you there,’” Lovato said. “It was so nice, and like I said, it was so healing for me too. We’ve been through so much together all of us, the Jonas Brothers and I, and it was really, really great to spend time with them.”

Lovato said that Joe, Nick and Kevin came to her dressing room before the show and “spent time getting to know my husband” — the musician Jordan Lutes, whom she married in May — “which was really meaningful to me.”

“They just thanked me profusely for flying across the country to perform with them and it was just so thoughtful,” she continued. “I felt so appreciated and it was really healing for us. I loved it, every second of it was so great.”

When asked if she felt any hesitation about performing with the JoBros after so many years, Lovato said it was a no-brainer.

“It was an instant like, ‘Let’s do this,’” she said. “Because in this new era of mine too, I’m throwing it back to the memes and some of the things I’ve been posting have been really nostalgic. So this just fit in with everything that I’ve been doing. And on top of that, it’s such a meaningful song to me — ‘This Is Me’ is my first big song that I’ve ever had. So getting to perform that with them for the first time in God knows how many years was just so full circle and so special and it was great to see them.”

Lovato’s new era sees her entering the dance-pop space with the new track “Fast.” Her upcoming ninth album is said to be in the “final stages” and due later this year, according to Rolling Stone.
