Rawalpindi police on Monday took into custody Aleema Khan and Noreen Niazi, sisters of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan, near the Dahgal checkpoint close to Adiala Jail after they staged a protest demanding a meeting with their brothers.
According to police sources, the two women were moved towards Chakri Interchange after being detained, while nine PTI workers who had been taken into custody alongside them were later released.
The arrests came after Aleema Khan and Noreen Niazi staged a sit-in near the Dahgal checkpoint to protest being denied a meeting with their brother, who is currently imprisoned at Adiala Jail.
Police officials had earlier urged them to disperse and return, but the women refused.
Before being taken into custody, Aleema Khan told reporters near the jail that the administration was not allowing an “open trial” for Imran Khan.
She alleged that the authorities were unwilling to grant this facility to Imran Khan because “if they do, they will have to release everyone.”
She further claimed that the current government was acting out of fear, adding that they had come to the jail for a scheduled meeting but were stopped two kilometres away.
