Rapper Kid Cudi opened up on Wednesday’s Call Her Daddy podcast about his experience testifying at Sean “Diddy” Combs’s trial in May. Cudi, whose legal name is Scott Mescudi, told host Alex Cooper that he “hated every minute” of testifying.
“I was just there because I had to be,” Cudi, 41, said, explaining that he had twice declined federal prosecutors’ requests for him to testify, only agreeing to appear after he was subpoenaed.
Looking back on the trial, though, Cudi told Cooper he realized it was important that he was there to support his ex-girlfriend, singer Cassie Ventura.
“I thought about, when I was up there, I’m here to support Cassie,” he said.
Cudi and Ventura, 38, started dating in late 2011. Cudi testified in court that, after finding out about the relationship, Combs, 55, allegedly broke into Cudi’s home. Cudi also testified about a time when a Molotov cocktail was thrown into his Porsche in early 2012, when he was still with Ventura. Combs and Ventura had dated on and off for 11 years, between 2007 and 2018, and Ventura accused Combs of rape and abuse in a lawsuit she filed in November 2023.
Even though Cudi and Ventura broke up in 2012, Cudi told Cooper that Ventura “is my friend.”
“I’ve always just wanted to see her thrive and do well and be happy because I know she was living a nightmare,” he said. “I was just there to support her. That’s what kind of gave me peace with it when I sat down in that chair.”
Combs was convicted on July 3 on two counts of prostitution-related offenses after a seven-week trial. He now faces up to 20 years in prison. His sentencing is scheduled for Oct. 3.
