World Masters Orienteering Championships 2025 conclude in Girona

The picturesque city of Girona and its scenic surroundings in Spain’s Catalonia region concluded a thrilling week of master-level orienteering as the World Masters Orienteering Championships wrapped up on Friday. The event, held from August 8 to 15, welcomed over 3000 athletes aged 35 to 95+ from 47 nations.

Competitions unfolded across a diverse array of terrains: historical sprint races navigated the medieval streets of Girona, while the forest events ventured into the challenging pine woods of Pals and Cassà de la Selva.

Aware of the summer heat in Spain, the organizers implemented thoughtful measures, including early morning start times, shaded arenas with humidifiers, plentiful hydration stations, and cooling facilities.

Participants in 26 different classes contested in Sprint, Middle, and Long Distance formats, each preceded by qualification rounds.

16 different nations won a gold medal during the championships, with Finland, Norway and Sweden topping the golden harvest with 12 golds each. Three athletes managed to make a “triple” and win all three final races: Celine Dodin (FRA) in W45, Anna Gornicka Antonowicz (POL) in W55 and Sole Nieminen (FIN) in W95.
