Roger Dubuis introduced the Excalibur Spider Flyback Chronograph in 2023, debuting it in a lightweight carbon case inspired by supercar engineering and embodying the brand’s vision of hyper horology – bold, expressive, and technically advanced watchmaking. Also in 2023, the Excalibur Spider Revuelto Flyback Chronograph was unveiled alongside the launch of the actual Lamborghini Revuelto. Then in 2024, the chronograph reappeared in the green Lamborghini SC63 livery, once again merging hypercar aesthetics with high-performance watch design. This year, Roger Dubuis expands the chronograph line once again with a new Excalibur Spider Flyback Chronograph, reaffirming its fusion of cutting-edge horological innovation and motorsport-inspired style.
The new Roger Dubuis Excalibur Spider Flyback Chronograph features a 45mm skeletonised case in pink gold and titanium, 17.3mm thick, coming with Roger Dubuis’ signature triple lugs design, with contrasting skeletonised pushers and a two-tone crown. Skeletonisation is extensive, as it has been since the Spider version of the Excalibur case was introduced, and provides a multi-level, complex look with plenty of added depth and expressive dimensionality. The 60-minute fixed bezel sports inclined double-digit numerals at 10-minute intervals that convey a sense of dynamism, a feature consistent with the series. Sapphire crystals with anti-reflective coating are fitted front and back, and water resistance is rated to 100m.
The openworked dial continues with the multi-layer layout inspired by the brand’s skeleton expertise. Key elements include the 120° Rotating Minute Counter at 3 o’clock, with an original satellite display for elapsed minutes with the three satellite hands bearing the 0, 1 and 2 for the tens rotate to allow you to read the units, and the tilted balance wheel at 9 o’clock, set at a 12° angle. Rhodium-plated screw-like hour markers are filled with Super-LumiNova, while the white gold hands are PVD-coated in black with luminous tips. A white varnished chronograph seconds hand adds a bit of contrast. The hour markers at 12 and 6 o´clock are missing to give space to the logo fitted onto the minutes track, and the tucked-in date window, respectively.
The RD780SQ automatic movement is fully integrated into the overall design for optimal visual impact. For performance, its vertical clutch ensures smooth engagement, while the column wheel exposed above 6 o’clock governs start, stop, and reset functions with a refined pusher feel. The Second Braking System (SBS), a patent-pending feature, allows for extra stability to the chronograph seconds hand and decreasing flicker. Diamond-coated silicon escapement components enhance durability and anti-magnetic resistance. The calibre operates at 28,800 vibrations/hour, offers a 72-hour power reserve, and contains 310 components finished to Geneva Seal standards using 16 distinct decorative techniques. The rotor on the back is shaped like a supercar wheel rim, underscoring the motorsport connection.
The new Roger Dubuis Excalibur Spider Flyback Chronograph is worn on a black rubber strap with a textured inlay and Quick Release System, closed with a pink gold and titanium triple folding clasp, also interchangeable without tools. The watch is a limited edition of 88; the price is EUR 142,500. For more details, please visit www.rogerdubuis.com.
