After testing since June, Google Messages is rolling out its Material 3 Expressive redesign, including an updated homepage, to the stable channel.
This redesign places the main list, which features larger contact photos for a less dense look, in a single container rather than individual ones for each line.
The app and status bars are joined, with this design matching the M3 Expressive conversation page.
The more notable part of this revamp is the app name in the top-left corner. Google is trialing two designs. Stable users are seeing the existing ‘G’ placed in a circle that roughly mirrors how there’s another one on the other side for the profile menu.

Those on the beta channel are seeing a new “Google Messages” text version that’s a bit on the long side. (While beta users have been seeing M3E since June, the new homepage rollout has been fairly limited until now.) It’s the “Google” wordmark plus “Messages” in a standard font.
It’s worth asking whether the app needs any branding at this point given the wide adoption.
More broadly, Google Messages is not rolling out the redesign in one go. Instead, it’s happening on a screen-by-screen basis with users seeing more and more Material 3 Expressive over the past 24 hours or so.
