Unstoppable! Breakout sprinting star Melissa Jefferson-Wooden remains undefeated in the 100m this season with her win at the Brussels Diamond League meeting on Friday (22 August).
Jefferson-Wooden smoked a world-class field and added another big scalp to her name in the process. The 24-year-old crossed the line in a time of 10.76 seconds, well ahead of training partner Sha’Carri Richardson in second place. Richardson, the reigning world champion, finished second in 11.08 and Great Britain’s Daryll Neita third with 11.15.
Jefferson-Wooden also had the best of Jamaican legend Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce, who finished fourth in 11.17.
The American sprinting star stopped the clock 0.04 off the meeting record Fraser-Pryce set in 2013.
Jefferson-Wooden revealed she would not be competing at the Diamond League Final in Zurich as she looks to do some fine-tuning ahead of the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo next month.
The Olympic relay gold medallist said she embraced the tag as the favourite for the gold medal in the women’s 100m at the global showpiece.
“It feels amazing. It is a testament to all the hard work I put in this year,” Jefferson-Wooden told Olympics.com afterwards.
“I am still going in as the one to hunt. I am not a reigning world or Olympic champion. I don’t have any individual titles to my name.”
