Jon M. Chu promises full scope of Elphaba, Glinda in ‘Wicked: For Good’

The director of Wicked, John M. Chu, hinted at the full scale epic story that will unfold in the upcoming sequel, Wicked: For Good.

The first part of the film, and adaptation of Broadway musical, followed the different backstories of witches of Oz, how they met and formed a close bond with one another, ending with Elphaba (Cynthia Erivo) choosing to rebel against the Wizard of Oz and embracing the identity of Wicked Witch of the West.

In a conversation with Empire, Chu explained that the fans have seen only half of the story, and what coming next is going to take the story in more depth.

“I love that people get to see the full masterplan, and the full scope of what Cynthia and Ariana do in this movie,” he said about the first instalment.

He went on to tease what viewers can expect from the upcoming film, he said, “I’m so happy they were appreciated in the first one, but movie two is where the meat comes out.”

The Crazy Rich Asians filmmaker went on to discussed the dramatic journey of both the witches specially Elphaba.

“The stakes are higher than ever for Elphaba,” Chu said. “She’s fighting to expose the Wizard, but she’s alone in that.”

Questioning her potential while subtly hinting towards how the story might unfold, he added, “Can one person actually make a difference? She’s up against the Wizard’s propaganda, calling her the Wicked Witch, talking about how her skin is green and her soul is impure. What happens when the home you believed in doesn’t want you anymore? Is it worth defending? Why stay?”

Leaving the questions for fans figure out, the much-anticipated second film, Wicked: For Good, is slated for release on November 21.
