iQiYi Pictures’ thriller “The Shadow’s Edge” climbed to the top of the Chinese box office in its second weekend with RMB182.9 million ($25.4 million), according to Artisan Gateway. The Larry Yang–directed film, starring Jackie Chan, has now grossed $77.5 million.
The film follows retired Macau surveillance expert Wong Tak-Chung (Chan), who’s brought back to track a high-tech heist carried out by a mastermind criminal known as the “Wolf King.” Assisting him is rookie cop He Qiuguo (Zhang Zifeng), as they face off against Tony Leung Ka-fai’s cunning Fu Longsheng and his criminal gang. The film was in third place on the global chart.
Shanghai Animation Film’s “Nobody” moved to second after topping the chart last weekend. The film added $19.2 million for a cumulative $175.3 million. Directed by Yu Shui, the film draws inspiration from “Journey to the West,” reimagining the classic mythology through the eyes of minor demons on their own spiritual pilgrimage. It occupied fourth place on the global chart.
“Dead to Rights,” from China Film, continued its strong run in third place, grossing $11.3 million. Its cumulative has now climbed to $381.4 million and is at eighth place on the global chart. Directed by Shen Ao and written by Shen Ao, Zhang Ke, and Xu Luyang, and set against the backdrop of the 1937 Nanjing Massacre and drawing from documented historical events, “Dead to Rights” follows A Chang (Liu Haoran of the “Detective Chinatown” franchise), a postman who assumes the identity of a photo developer to survive the Japanese occupation. Operating from within the walls of a Japanese-controlled studio, he covertly shelters Chinese soldiers and civilians in an act of quiet resistance. It ranked sixth on the global chart.
New Line Cinema’s horror franchise entry “Final Destination: Bloodlines” launched in fourth with $8.4 million in its opening frame.
Rounding out the top five, Universal’s animation “The Bad Guys 2” added $4.6 million for a cume of $16.5 million.
Weekend box office came to $78.3 million, lifting China’s year-to-date total to $5.32 billion, up 17.9% compared with the same point in 2024.
