ATC puts off hearing of pleas for medical examination of Imran Khan till Sept 1

RAWALPINDI  –  An Anti-Terrorism Court (ATC) here on Saturday put off hearing into the plea filed by Aleema Khan asking for medical check up of her brother Imran KIhan till September 1 after the jail administration submitted a detailed reply in the court.

ATC-I Judge Amjad Ali Shah took up the application filed by Aleema Khan through her lawyer Muhammad Faisal Malik on Saturday and deferred the hearing after the jail superintendent filed his reply that the petitioner needed to respond to.

In the four-page-long written response, the jail authorities provided the details regarding medical examinations of Imran Khan, founder of the Pakistan Tehrik-e-Insaf (PTI), from the time he was admitted to the jail. The report noted that the former Prime Minister was medically examined and given the due treatment whenever he needed it. Doctors and consultants from Rawalpindi Teaching Hospital and other government hospitals regularly visit the jail and examine the inmates. The report noted that lately Imran Khan got medically examined on August 12 when he had bilateral wax build up in the ears for which he underwent clearance via syringing. The report further said that Imran Khan previously had mild abdominal pain two days ago that was now settled.  In the response, the jail authorities also noted that for dental treatment, the board advised varnish application after arrangement. Supportive management was recommended for sensitivity of teeth and chronic tinnitus, the reported noted.

In the application Aleema Khan said that she met Imran Khan in the jail on August 26 when he complained that he was suffering from pressure and cloudiness in the eyes. She apprised the court that her 73-year-old brother was arrested on August 5, 2023 and since then had been incarcerated in the jail.

His last medical check up was carried out on November 4, 2024 and since that there was no medical check-up despite repeated applications.

The applicant further requested to the court for inclusion of personal doctors of Imran Khan in the medical board. The doctors included Dr Faisal Sultan from Shaukat Khanum Memorial hospital, who is familiar with his detailed medical history, and Professor Dr Faud Ahmed Khan, head of Ophthalmology at Rawalpindi Medical University, for eye examinations. Aleema Khan further said that she had no trust on the doctors working under the subordination of either the central government or the Punjab government.

The applicant submitted before the court that the medical board including the two proposed doctors be constituted and the superintendent be directed to get the medical examination of Imran Khan be done.
