Following Jennifer Lawrence and Rebecca Romijn‘s turns as Mystique, Jinkx Monsoon is ready for a trans actress to morph into the X-Men character.
The Oh, Mary! Broadway star jokingly said she’s told her agent to “start dropping my name” for the role after Marvel Studios previously regained rights to the X-Men with a reboot in the works, explaining the significance of the character for the trans community.
“Can I manifest something? Marvel has now regained the rights to X-Men. I think it would be a really cool to have a trans woman be Mystique,” she said on Vulture’s Good One podcast. “She is my favorite Marvel character of all time, and I relate to her so much.”
Monsoon continued, “And I think a lot of trans people do, and we think about how nice it would be to just blend in and not have everyone pay attention to us if we don’t want. And then, we also relate to the fact that she’s not accepted in her original form, so she has to transition to even walk around.”
Following her portrayals of villain Maestro in Doctor Who and Mary Todd Lincoln in Cole Escola’s Broadway hit Oh, Mary!, the drag star has thrown her name into the running to play Mystique.
“I texted my agent, I was like, ‘I don’t know what’s going on there, but please start dropping my name,’” said Monsoon.
The RuPaul’s Drag Race alum might have some competition after Hunter Schafer said it “would be cool” to play Mystique in response to fans calling for her to be cast.
Meanwhile, Romijn has been confirmed to reprise her portrayal of the anti-hero in the upcoming MCU title Avengers: Doomsday, alongside several other faces from the X-Men onscreen franchise that launched in 2000.
