The Asia Cup 2025 cricket tournament, scheduled in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) from September 9 and 28, will see eight top nations from the continent battle it out for the title.
Organised by the Asian Cricket Council (ACC), this will be the 17th edition of the tournament and will be played in the T20I format.
In terms of the number of teams, this is the biggest Asia Cup in history. The 2023 edition featured six countries.
India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Afghanistan, Hong Kong China, Oman and hosts UAE are the eight teams competing for the Asia Cup crown this year.
They will start the campaign divided into two groups. The top two sides from each group will progress to the Super 4s, from where the top two will enter the final on September 28.
Defending Asia Cup champions India and their arch-rivals Pakistan make up Group A along with hosts UAE and Oman. Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Afghanistan and Hong Kong China make up Group B.
Riding high on their historic run at the T20 World Cup last year, Afghanistan were the first to name their squad for the Asian Cup 2025. Veteran all-rounder Rashid Khan will captain the 17-member unit.
Suryakumar Yadav has put any injury concerns to rest and has been named as the captain of India’s Asia Cup 2025 cricket team. Shubman Gill will serve as his deputy.
With eight titles, India are the most successful team in Asia Cup history.
With Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli having retired from T20 cricket after winning the World Cup last year in the USA, this will be the Indian men’s cricket team’s first major multi-team assignment in the format.
Meanwhile, India’s arch-rivals Pakistan, two-time continental champions, have left out star names like Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan. They will be led by Salman Ali Agha in the upcoming tournament.
Meanwhile, six-time champions Sri Lanka, the only other team to have lifted the Asia Cup title besides India and Pakistan, will be led by Charith Asalanka. Star spinner Wanindu Hasaranga was named in the squad despite an injury.
Hosts UAE are yet to name their Asia Cup squad.
