Looe pub asking for funding to help prevent flooding

The landlord of a Cornish pub said he would ask for funding to install defences after being impacted by floodwater twice in a week.

Garry Seymour, from the Jolly Sailor Inn in West Looe, said the pub had about 6-8 inches (152-203mm) of water in areas outside the pub on Wednesday morning after heavy rain.

Mr Seymour said the pub became flooded after rainfall on Thursday night which led to firefighters being deployed to help.

While the latest flooding did not prevent the venue from opening, Mr Seymour said he had spoken to Cornwall Council about funding for floodgates. The council has been contacted for comment.

Mr Seymour said Wednesday’s flooding had left mud and other debris around the side of the building but did not appear to have made its way inside.

He said the pub was at one of the lowest points of West Looe and floodgates would give the business valuable protection.

Mr Seymour added: “We’re going to try to get some funding for floodgates.

“I bought a cheap one off Amazon which we use, but we need something a bit more robust.”
