Cameroon, Algeria, Mali and Tunisia rise to the occasion

The African qualifiers of the FIFA World Cup 2026 resumed on Thursday, 04 September with Cameroon, Algeria, Malie and Tunisia registering crucial wins in their quest for a place at the world showpiece next year.

Below is a summary of the results.

 

Cameroon 3–0 Eswatini

Scorers: Gift Gamedze (own goal, 6’), Georges-Kévin Nkoudou (25’), Arthur Avom (28’)

Cameroon did the job perfectly against Eswatini in N’Djamena. The Indomitable Lions, who needed a win to stay close to Cape Verde, settled matters within the first half-hour.

A cross from Bryan Mbeumo was deflected into his own net by Gift Gamedze to open the scoring (6’), before Georges-Kévin Nkoudou doubled the lead at the back post (25’).

Three minutes later, Arthur Avom netted the third after a setup from Vincent Aboubakar (28’).

The rest of the match was  balanced as Cameroon cruised to victory. The former African champions remain one point behind Cape Verde, their next opponents on Tuesday.

 

Algeria 3–1 Botswana

Scorers: Amoura (33’), Bounedjah (72’, 90’+6) / Kopelang (43’)

Algeria struggled before overcoming Botswana. The Fennecs opened the scoring through Amoura, who headed in a cross from Bensebaini just after the half-hour mark. Botswana levelled matters just before halftime to set up what would be an interesting second half.

Algeria’s introduction of Baghdad Bounedjah made the difference. The striker restored the lead from an Amoura assist then sealed his brace at the death after being set up by Belaïli.

With this win, Algeria strengthen their top spot and now look ahead to their clash against Guinea on Monday in Casablanca.

 

Mali 3–0 Comoros

Scorers: Nene Dorgeles (28’), Kamory Doumbia (70’, pen), Lassana Coulibaly (76’)

Mali came out on top against Comoros in Berkane. After an evenly balanced first half, Nene Dorgeles converted a service from Mustapha Sangaré to open the scoring in the 28th minute..

After the break, Comoros created several chances but conceded a penalty, for Kamory Doumbia to calmly slot it home. Minutes later, Lassana Coulibaly sealed Mali’s victory from a cross by Lassine Sinayoko in the 76th minute.

With this win, Mali move up to third place and will face group leaders Ghana on Monday.

 

Tunisia 3–0 Liberia
Scorers: Hazem Mastouri (5’), Ferjani Sassi (66’), Elias Saad (90’+4)

Tunisia took another step toward the 2026 World Cup by beating Liberia in Radès. A defensive error gifted Hazem Mastouri the opener as early as the 5th minute.

It took until the hour mark for Ferjani Sassi to double the lead with a header from a Hannibal Mejbri free kick. Substitute Elias Saad then sealed the score with a superb free kick in stoppage time (90’+4).

Top of their group with a 7-point lead, Tunisia could edge even closer to qualification on Monday against Equatorial Guinea.
