OpenAI has rolled out a new feature on ChatGPT that will allow users to branch conversations in related areas without losing the original thread. The update will now be available to logged in users on web, OpenAI announced on X.

The feature has been oft requested by ChatGPT users previously.

A user on the OpenAI Developer Community forum explained how the feature would be beneficial for coding. “When tackling complex tasks in coding, users often encounter multiple steps. Instead of starting over each time, users should be able to create a branch for each step, allowing independent problem-solving for each stage. Once all steps are completed, users could merge the branches to integrate the solutions. This feature would make it much easier to manage and solve multi-step processes, improving productivity and efficiency,” a comment noted.

When users right click on a conversation, they should be able to see an option for “Branch in new chat” above another option for “Read aloud.”

OpenAI also expanded their ChatGPT Projects feature for free to all users so users can maintain a separate workspace for everything related to a long-running area being worked on.
