2025 US Open final – Carlos Alcaraz chases perfect tournament and No.1 spot
‘Brutal’ does not begin to describe Alcaraz’s US Open campaign, where he arrives at the championship match without dropping a set. The last man to do that? None other than Federer a decade ago, though worth noting that he lost the final to Djokovic.
Alcaraz breezed past the Serbian in a routine final-four matchup, having maintained an outstanding level throughout the two weeks at Flushing Meadows. He has come through each best-of-five-sets match in an average of one hour, 59 minutes, only dropping 9.6 games on average per win.
For the 22-year-old, he has been playing arguably his best tennis of the season, which speaks volumes in a campaign where he was crowned Roland-Garros champion. Tactically astute with razor-sharp concentration all match long, something which he admits he has improved in pursuit of his best version.
“It’s something that I’m working on, just the consistency in the matches, in the tournaments, for the year in general,” Alcaraz said in his post-match press conference following the semi-final. “Just not having up-and-downs in the match. The level that I start the match, I just wanted to keep that level really high during the whole match.”
Were he to prevail on Sunday, the Spaniard would become world No.1 for the first time since August 2023 and dethrone Sinner. In his eighth consecutive ATP Tour final, one match stands in the way of Alcaraz to reclaim his US Open and No.1 crowns.
