There’s under two days left until Apple’s ‘Awe dropping’ event for all four iPhone 17 models, AirPods Pro 3, a trio of Apple Watch models, and more. That doesn’t stop last minute leaks, though – and we just got an incredibly interesting new leak for iPhone 17 battery capacities.
iPhone 17 battery capacities
This leak comes from reputable Apple leaker ShrimpApplePro, and it shares “real” battery capacities for all four iPhone 17 models:
- iPhone 17: 3692mAh (3.6% gain versus iPhone 16)
- iPhone 17 Air: 3149mAh/3036mAh (48% loss versus iPhone 16 Plus)
- iPhone 17 Pro: 4252mAh/3988mAh (up to 18.6% gain versus iPhone 16 Pro)
- iPhone 17 Pro Max: 5088mAh/4823mAh (up to 8.6% gain versus iPhone 16 Pro Max)
For the three redesigned iPhone 17 models: 17 Air, 17 Pro, and 17 Pro Max, Apple seems to finally be taking advantage of the additional space in the phone. If you have an eSIM-only iPhone, you’ll have around 5% more battery capacity over other users with physical SIM card trays.
iPhone 17 only has a single battery capacity listed. It’s possible that this phone won’t offer more battery life for eSIM-only users, possibly because the 17 is largely going to share the same design language with the iPhone 16.
Nonetheless, these are sizable battery gains across the lineup, especially with the standard iPhone 17 Pro model. iPhone 17 Air’s reported battery capacity of 3149mAh is also a fair bit higher than previous reports.
eSIM-only advantage
It’s great that after 3 years of eSIM only iPhones, Apple is finally putting that additional space to use. Beforehand, Apple simply included a rubber block inside of the phone where the SIM card tray used to be.
Apple is also expanding eSIM-only iPhones to some additional regions this year, so that’s likely why Apple is finally doing something with the space.
To be more specific, eSIM-only iPhones will have this much of an advantage over their physical SIM counterparts:
- iPhone 17 Air: 3.7% additional capacity
- iPhone 17 Pro: 6.6% additional capacity
- iPhone 17 Pro Max: 5.5% additional capacity
It’s always possible these rumors end up being incorrect, but given where they originate from – it’s quite likely that these are the official iPhone 17 battery numbers we’re looking at. If true, it’s incredibly exciting that eSIM-only iPhones will deliver a battery advantage for once.
Are you looking forward to the iPhone 17 line? Do these higher battery capacities make you more willing to upgrade? Let us know in the comments.
