England coach Brendon McCullum on Test Match Special: “I think ultimately, everyone wants this England side to be successful.

“There’s just different styles that you’ll operate with that some people will like, some people won’t like. You can’t worry about that, you can’t change your game because of what people think.

“You have to have a belief in what you want and use the resources around you to keep performing. We live and die by our results but being hung up on that isn’t helpful when you’re at the crease. It’s removing that from the picture and thinking about what you’re doing. How am I going to manipulate this situation and bring my team success. That’s what we try to do.

“We’re as determined and as competitive as everyone else, we want success for our team. We take it as a given that we’re competitive, we take it as a given that we want to win. We focus on the process as what we’re trying to achieve and get these guys to make decisions to give us the greatest chance to succeed.

“I’m married to an Australian so I know how competitive they are. It’s time to get it on when it comes to the Ashes. We’ve been very deliberate that when it comes to Test cricket, we’ve focused on the job at hand.

“For us now, the next series is the Ashes. Bring it on, it’s going to be great, the hype, the intensity. Our boys are ready to embrace and enjoy what comes with it. That includes the pressure and the scrutiny.”
