iPhone 18, iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max to get major updates over iPhone 17 series: Expected design, colours, specs – Technology News

If you were planning to wait out the iPhone 17 series this year after reading about the rumours and leaks about the iPhone 18 series, you may want to read this. As impressive as the iPhone 17 series may seem, it still leaves room for improvement and that’s where leaksters went wild with the early predictions and supply chain rumours. With a focus on the Dynamic Island and front camera, the iPhone 18 series seemed poised to be the one to buy.

However, fresh speculation from the Chinese social media platform Weibo suggests that while Apple may be planning a significant design change for its upcoming iPhone 18 lineup, it won’t alter the front of the iPhone 18, iPhone 18 Pro, and iPhone 18 Pro Max. It turns out that Apple isn’t changing the front fascia of the iPhone 18 series majorly, thus hinting at a subtle change for the next generation.

iPhone 18 series to not change the Dynamic Island size

The new rumour hints at a smaller size for the pill-shaped cutout, but the new models will not integrate the Face ID sensors under the display. Instead, the devices are expected to retain a visible front camera, with the Dynamic Island shrinking in size to accommodate the change. This design change is being viewed by some as an interim step toward an eventual all-screen front display – wherein all the sensors are hidden beneath the display.

It is said that Apple will gradually move to an under-display setup for the FaceID arrangement – a change that has been widely rumoured for the 20th-anniversary iPhone.

This iPhone 18 leak contradicts previous rumours, one that said the under-screen Face ID would debut with the iPhone 17 Pro – a notion that has been proven wrong. It is now assumed that Apple may reserve the punch-hole camera layout for the iPhone 19 series, where the FaceID sensors will be positioned underneath the display.

iPhone 18 series: What else do we know

Other than the controversy surrounding the Dynamic Island, the iPhone 18 series is also expected to bring a couple of other changes and upgrades. The A20 series Apple chips are expected to introduce 2nm processors to mainstream smartphones, promising superior performance boosts. Battery upgrades are also expected on all the models, and Apple could also bump up the camera sensors on the non-Pro models. While no information on the colours is available yet, Apple is rumoured to hold on to the design trends introduced with the iPhone 17 series, i.e., aluminium unibody design on the iPhone 18 Pro models and simpler design on the iPhone 18. The iPhone Air 2 could feature further refinement to the internals for superior efficiency.
