Jonas Vingegaard seals Vuelta a España victory, adding a third Grand Tour title to his name

Two-time Tour de France winner Jonas Vingegaard added another Grand Tour title to his name as he sealed the general classification of the men’s Vuelta a España road cycling stage race on Sunday (14 September).

Vingegaard was a model of consistency in this year’s 21-day stage race, winning three of those en route to capturing the maillot rojo.

The 28-year-old became the first Dane to capture La Vuelta after winning three stages in this year’s race. He now boasts five stage wins in total.

Vingegaard and Portugal’s Joāo Almeida were embroiled in a battle for the general classification. The Dane won the penultimate stage on the gruelling ascent on the Bola del Mundo for a near-unassailable lead of one minute, 16 seconds.

The final stage of the race was brought to a halt due to protests at the finish line in Madrid, with the peloton held up with 60 kilometres to go. The final stage is a ceremonial ride into Madrid.

Organisers cancelled the remainder of the stage out of concern for the safety of the riders and their entourage.
