Originally from Brazil, Maria Luiza de Miranda Geraldi is keen on building a legal career infused with international experiences. This interest led her to Dubai in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), where she worked as a legal counsel for Global Leader in Sport (GLS), an international agency that provides consultancy and management services to brands, clubs, and players and organizes sports events. Her passion for thinking globally brings her to Chicago to study at the Law School.
Tell us a bit about your background and professional experiences.
I am a regulatory, antitrust, and compliance lawyer with 10 years’ experience in mergers & acquisitions, investigations, and reputational matters. Now based in Dubai, I am working as legal counsel at a sports agency, with a focus on sports law, corporate, and contracts.
What type of law do you practice in Dubai?
My practice area includes antitrust, competition, compliance, investigations, and white-collar.
What is motivating your decision to get an LLM?
I’m very interested in having the opportunity to experience the US academic environment, to network with high-profile professionals, and to further internationalize my career.
Why did you choose the University of Chicago Law School?
I chose the Law School due to its importance to the antitrust thinking and law-and-economics research, which continues to impact competition policy globally.
What do you hope/plan to do with your LLM after you graduate?
I’m planning to build a career within a government body in the UAE and contribute to the development of this practice area in the Middle East.
What are you most looking forward to in coming to the Law School, the US, and/or the city of Chicago?
In addition to my studies, I am looking forward to experiencing the cold weather for a change, interacting with people from different countries and backgrounds, and exploring the sports scene in Chicago.
Any interesting hobbies or interests you’d like to share?
I am into sports. Specifically, triathlon and padel.
