Anna Hall claims stunning heptathlon gold in Tokyo

Anna Hall has won the heptathlon world title on the penultimate day of action at the 2025 World Athletics Championships in Tokyo.

The 24-year-old finished with 6888 points after the final 800m race, ahead of Kate O’Connor of Ireland, who won silver (6714). The USA’s Taliyah Brooks and Great Britain and Northern Ireland’s Katarina Johnson-Thompson shared bronze.

The victory represents the first world title of Hall’s career, after she took silver at Budapest 23 and bronze in 2022 in Oregon. She is only the second athlete from the USA to be crowned world champion in the heptathlon, after world record holder Jackie Joyner-Kersee, who claimed gold in 1987 and 1993.

Hall entered the final 800m race with a lead of 122 points over Ireland’s O’Connor, with defending world champion Johnson-Thompson 287 points behind the leader.

However, Colorado native Hall left nothing to chance, finishing first in a time of 2:06.08 to confirm the top spot on the podium, and with it a long-awaited gold medal.
