Popular Chinese Tesla rival with £40k SUV to finally sell in the UK | UK | News

A major Chinese EV manufacturer has brought its all-electric SUV to the UK as it expands its presence across Europe. Changan, one of China’s “Big Four” automobile groups has made major strides on the continent in the past few years, building up its R&D infrastructure including in Italy, Germany, and the UK.

Its sub-brand Deepal introduced various cars to the European market earlier this year, before bringing the S07 to the Britain in September, 2025. The five-door mid-size SUV crossover, the first of its vehicles to appear at British delearships, is set to rival models such as the Tesla Model Y, made by Elon Musk’s EV company, as well as the Volkswagen ID.4, and BYD Seal U.

The S07, a five-seater currently available in one model, is priced at just under £40,000 and comes in five different colours.

According to the Changan’s website, the car features a “sleek, fastback-inspired design combines the sportiness of a coupe with the versatility of an SUV, delivering both style and practicality”, and is designed by its studio in Turin, Italy.

A What Car? review says the vehicle is built with value for money in mind, “costing the same or, in some cases, less than rivals including the Kia EV6 and Skoda Enyaq, while offering loads of standard equipment and a healthy electric range”.

According to Auto Express, the firm has announced it will launch its smaller Deepal S05 crossover, which will be available in pure electric or range-extender hybrid variants, by the end of 2025.

According to the outlet, the vehicle is set to compete with the likes of Kia EV3, which launched at the end of 2014 and is the popular South Korean brand’s most affordable electric model, with prices starting at around £32,000.

A price for the S05 doesn’t appear to have been announced yet.

Changan’s UK Managing Director Nic Thomas said: “We will bring the Changan Deepal S05 to the UK by the end of this year”.

He said the firm “will have a range of price points and engines”.

“Changan is a global automotive player with more than 60 vehicles in the pipeline.” However, he stressed that Changan will “only bring the right ones here that match UK automotive market needs”.
