It seems that once a year, Netflix strikes gold with one of their original projects. Whether it’s a gripping docuseries like Tiger King (which absolutely pulled us through the beginning of the COVID-19 lockdown) or a breakout hit like Richard Gadd’s Baby Reindeer, the streamer gets viewers really talking at least once during the year. So far, 2025’s big hit has been the miniseries Adolescence. Co-created by Jack Thorne and Stephen Graham, the gripping crime drama took audiences by storm when it arrived back in March, and folks aren’t done talking about it just yet. Thanks to its major sweep at last weekend’s Emmy Awards, the title has found its way back into homes around the globe.
According to FlixPatrol, Adolescence is now in sixth place in Netflix’s worldwide standings. More than 30 countries, including the United States, Australia, Qatar, Poland, and more, are tuning in for the first time, or maybe even for a rewatch, to find out what all the hype’s about. While there’s plenty of hype to unfurl, the magic behind Adolescence lives within the leading cast of characters portrayed by Graham, Owen Cooper, Ashley Walters, Erin Doherty, and others. These intensely focused-in performances, paired with the camera work that saw each episode filmed in one continuous take, is what drew audiences to the show in the first place and why its staying power has been so moving over the last several months.
At last week’s Emmy Award ceremony, the title was nominated eight times, with Cooper marking a monumental moment when he became the youngest actor to take home Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Limited Series. Likewise, both Graham and Doherty nabbed trophies for their work, with the title also taking home the bragging rights of being dubbed Outstanding Limited Series. As the night continued to play out, it became apparent that Adolescence would be the breakaway hit of the year, besting other top performers like HBO’s The Penguin and Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story.
‘Adolescence’s Cultural Impact
Perhaps most importantly, Adolescence got people talking about the dangers facing teens in this day and age. From dinner tables to Parliament, it seemed like the series had a vice-like grip on just about everyone. In the case of the latter, Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer said:
“I want it to be shown in schools, I want it to be shown in Parliament. It’s crucial because this is only going to get worse. It’s something that people need to be talking about, hopefully that’s what drama can do.”
Head over to Netflix to watch the multi-Emmy Award-winning miniseries now.
