The Strad News – String duo wins chamber music prize at ‘Città di Cervignano’ competition

Duo Ulisse and Maria Malfado Mazzon has been announced as the winner of the chamber music prize (senior category C) at the 4th international competition ‘Città di Cervignano’, the final of which took place on 19 September. The duo wins a cash prize of €1,000 which is to be used for further studies, and a concert date at the AGM Music Academy in Cervignano del Friuli.

On its social media account, the competition praised the ‘extraordinary performance’ of the duo, which comprises siblings Ulisse Mazzon (violin) and Maria Mafalda Mazzon (cello). The duo, which is from San Donà di Piave, Veneto, studied at the Accademia Musicale de Chigiana and previously won first prize in the 2024 Euregio Chamber Music Competition in Trento, Italy.

The final round, a 30-minute free choice recital, was held at the Teatro Pasolini in Cervignano del Friuli. The jury comprised AGM Academy professors, saxophonist Mario Marzi, bass-baritone Sikai Lai and pianist Daniele Bonini.

The competition, which this year runs from 18 to 27 September, invites entrants up to the age of 30 to compete in its piano, violin, flute and chamber music categories. The other finalists were Duo Bastanzetti–Migotto, Trio Lagareza, the Cino Ghedin Quartet, and the Rapsodia Saxophone Quartet.

The AGM Music Academy and Competition are ventures of the AGM Association for Artistic, Musical, Dance and Linguistic Studies, a non-profit organisation that provides training in art, music and language learning in Italy.
