At UN, Pakistan stands for peace amid Ukraine tensions

Pakistan urged dialogue and restraint to prevent further escalation amid recent reported Russian airspace incursions. Ambassador Asim Iftikhar Ahmad addressed the UN Security Council, emphasizing that diplomacy is the “only path” to lasting peace. He reaffirmed Pakistan’s support for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of all countries involved. The conflict in Ukraine, now in its fourth year, threatens regional and global stability.

Ahmad stressed the importance of meaningful dialogue that respects the UN Charter and international law. He said peace must address the security concerns of all sides to be just and sustainable. The Security Council convened after Estonia accused Russia of violating its airspace on September 19 with three MiG-31 fighter jets. Russia denied these claims, calling them “Russophobic hysteria” and asserting that its flights followed international rules. Estonia’s Foreign Minister presented radar evidence, labeling the violations part of a pattern of provocations.

UN officials warned the escalating conflict could spiral out of control, citing intensifying Russian strikes in Ukraine. Pakistan highlighted that military actions will not resolve the crisis. It urged all parties to commit to negotiations and respect international agreements for peace.

Pakistan’s call at the UN Security Council reinforces the global demand for dialogue, diplomacy, and restraint. The country continues to advocate for peace based on respect for sovereignty, law, and multilateral cooperation to end the conflict in Ukraine.
