Borderlands 4 Switch 2 port delayed due to need for “additional development and polish time”

The Nintendo Switch 2 port of Borderlands 4 has been indefinitely delayed, Gearbox Software has announced.

Due to launch on October 3, the game’s developer said it needed “additional development and polish time” to “deliver the best possible experience to our fans.”

“We do not take this decision lightly,” it said on social media. “Our hope is to also better align this release with the addition of cross saves, which we are working on and recognise is very important.”

Gearbox said it will update the “release timing” for Borderlands 4 once it has “fully adjusted [its] plans.”

Digital pre-orders of the game on Switch 2 will be cancelled, with the process starting automatically on September 26. Gearbox noted that “customers can initiate that process themselves now” on the Nintendo eShop.

Those who have pre-ordered a physical copy of the game are recommended to contact the specific retailer it was purchased from.

Since its September 12 launch, Borderlands 4 has been met with criticism regarding its performance on PC. Players have cited issues with performance, optimization, and crashes on Steam, leading to an overall mixed review rating.

In response, Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford said the game’s performance is “pretty damn optimal”, suggesting players “tune” their game to their “preferences using the tools available.”

“It is a mistake to believe or expect that PCs between minimum specification and recommended specification can achieve all of extremely high frame rate, maximum/ultra features, and extremely high resolution,” Pitchford said in a series of X posts.

“Please accept that the game is doing a lot and running pretty optimally and that you may have to either accept some trade offs between fps, features, and resolution as your preference or you will continue to be disappointed.”

Despite this, Borderlands 4 has amassed over 2.5 million players since launch, generating over $150 million in revenue according to data shared by Alinea Analytics.
