SOUTH BEND, Ind. — Sophomore Alex Cairo and freshman Pierce Shaya went 2-0 in doubles as the University of Michigan men’s tennis team opened its fall season at the Fighting Irish Invitational, held at Clay High School.
The pair collected a 6-3 win over Western Michigan’s Oscar Corwin/Jack Davison on Friday (Sept. 26) and rallied for a 7-6 (11) victory against the host school’s Nick Patrick/Nolan Balthazor on Sunday (Sept. 28).
Shaya earned his first singles win as a Wolverine with a 6-3, 6-1 victory over Notre Dame’s Noah Becker on Friday. Cairo also captured a singles win against WMU’s Matej Kajzer, 6-3, 6-1.
The Wolverines will compete next weekend (Oct. 3-5) at the Hope College Invitational.
