MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. – Central Michigan Field Hockey defeated Ohio in overtime on Sunday 5-4, for the Chippewas second straight Mid-American Conference win.
CMU earned their first MAC win Friday, defeating Ball State 2-1. The last time the Chippewas won back-to-back MAC games was in 2020, over the same opponents. CMU logged a 2-1 win over the Bobcats (March 27) before defeating the Cardinals 1-0 (April 17).
The last time the Chippewas won at least six of the first nine was in 2002, when the Chippewas logged their first three losses to Michigan, No. 8 Michigan State, and No. 12 Northeastern
“Exciting stuff and I’m proud of this team, our effort and our preparation, to get two MAC victories one away and one home. It’s just a tribute to what we have in store for us.” Head Coach Jennifer Johnstone said on the win.
Senior Mallory Camryn delivered big to celebrate Senior Day, notching her second hat trick of the season, the first was at Temple (Aug. 31). Camryn’s third goal was the winner in overtime, coming two minutes into the extra period, where she collected her own rebound to beat the keeper.
“Mal was being face guarded in the circle; they were following her everywhere, so the fact that she had a hat trick today, is amazing. I don’t know how she did it with somebody marking her all over the field.”
Camryn scored the first two goals of the game, coming within three minutes of each other in the second quarter. Camryn now sits at 13 goals, with three assists, for 28 points on the season.
“We didn’t let a goal in during the second quarter, which was huge for us because that’s been something we’ve struggled with. We were really proud of that at halftime.”
The Chippewas, entering the third with a 2-0 lead, gave up three unanswered goals, before junior Annabelle Cotroneo tied the game back up with seven seconds left in the quarter. It was Cotroneo’s first career goal.
“Amelia brought a huge spark off the bench today. Annabelle getting her first career goal, she’s been wanting that so long, for her to get it was amazing to see.”
Ohio retook the lead three minutes into the fourth, and maintained a solid defensive front, forcing the Chippewas to pull graduate keeper Ashley Cogger. The risk paid off, with just over 30 seconds left in regulation, Camryn fed senior Amelia Lane down low to bury her first goal of the season, tying the game.
On top of the offensive fueled game was solid defensive play, with freshman Pleun Van Gent logging two defensive saves.
Sunday’s victory broke a five-game losing streak in the series against the Bobcats, who on Friday (Sept. 26) upset No. 11 Massachusetts, 1-0, at home in Athens, Ohio.
“The benefit was us being at home, a huge advantage having to do our travel Friday instead of today: that was big. Lots of parents and families were here supporting us this weekend, support to push the kids to try and do everything they could today to take care of it. I’m proud of them.”
Post-game the Chippewas celebrated their four seniors and one graduate student for Senior Day. Players honored included Lane, Rosa Ruiz Hellin, Shannon Dwyer, Camryn, and Cogger.
CMU returns to action Friday, Oct. 3, hitting the road to take on Minutewomen in Amherst, Mass.
