TASCAM has announced the FR-AV4 field recorder designed for filmmakers and sound recordists.
The FR-AV4 utilizes 32-bit 192 kHz float recording to capture four channels of audio with a dynamic range of 133 dB without needing gain adjustment to prevent clipping. This eliminates one source of worry when recording scenes that have very quiet and very loud passages, according to the company. Recordings can be saved in WAV or MP3 format on SDXC cards up to 512 GB in size.
The rugged body has four XLR/TRS combo jacks with phantom power for professional microphones, such as this shotgun mic sold on Amazon. A 3.5 mm headphone jack and 1.9-inch color touchscreen can be used to monitor recording quality with headphones in real-time.
To help synchronize footage during multi-camera shoots, the FR-AV4 can generate and sync timecode to all connected cameras. The optional TASCAM Recorder Connect smartphone app with AK-BT2 Bluetooth adapter can be used to remotely control the TASCAM FR-AV4. The recorder can also be used as an audio interface with computers when connected by USB.
The field recorder can be powered by four AA batteries, a USB-C power source, or an optional PS-P520U AC power adapter. The unit measures 7.25 x 1.66 x 5.12 in. (184 x 42 x 130 mm) and weighs 1.46 lbs. (660 g).
