Amazon Web Services (AWS) has partnered with Dentsu Creative and ONCE, with IO DIGITAL X as the implementation partner, to open up the hugely popular comic universe to this sizeable audience who cannot—or struggle to—see the visual stories we take for granted.
In collaboration, we developed ComicCast, a groundbreaking mobile application prototype powered by AWS AI that brings immersive comic experiences to blind people. The app was unveiled at San Diego Comic-CON, which, for the first time in 55 years, was hosted outside the United States, in Málaga (Spain). ComicCast was demonstrated live with blind attendees, who delighted in experiencing the enthralling world of comic books for the first time.

Picture this: a blind reader opens a comic, places their smartphone over the page, and within seconds, the story begins to unfold—not in pictures, but through richly descriptive audio. Characters speak in distinct voices, their words mirroring the cartoon’s tone and emotion. Onomatopoeia leaps off the page as sound effects, while a narrator fills in the visual details that tie the action together. For the first time, the pace, humour, and energy of a comic can be experienced without sight.
Behind this simplicity is sophisticated technology. The experience is powered by two innovative generative AI models: Amazon Nova Pro and Anthropic’s Claude within Amazon Bedrock. Amazon Nova and Claude handle the heavy lifting of complete visual analysis, scene comprehension, character tracking, and narrative description generation, all in real time. They ensure that the AI doesn’t just “read” the comic but understands its context, flow, and intent by analysing panels, text, speech bubbles, even visual gags and then reconstructs them into a seamless auditory experience. To bring the dialogue to life, ElevenLabs manages voice synthesis and voice mapping, giving each character their own personality, while sound effects recreate the energy of the printed page.
That is the magic of ComicCast: complete immersion in the humour, drama, and atmosphere that make comics much loved by so many. Introducing this genre to an audience that until now had limited access to this kind of artistic content is nothing short of a cultural breakthrough. Where audiobooks and screen readers once fell short, ComicCast finally makes comics accessible while preserving the essence that fans love.

Perhaps even more special is the fact that the application was trained using one of Spain’s most iconic comics—Mortadelo and Filemón. Bringing national treasures such as this to people who have never been able to “read” comics before demonstrates the power of innovation in driving greater inclusion in culture and entertainment. “Collaborating on a project that brings the universe of comics closer to blind people is something my father would have loved,” said Nuria Ibáñez, daughter of the comic’s legendary creator, Francisco Ibáñez.
For the millions of comic book readers worldwide, the fun and enjoyment of this medium is unmatched. On average, a comic book reader consumes about 4 comics per week fuelling an industry that is set to reach USD 26.6 billion by 2033.This impressive readership reflects the genre’s universal appeal and its ability to transport readers to exciting new places. Now, with ComicCast’s ability to translate comics’ visual spectacles into equally vivid auditory performances, those with sight barriers need never miss out again.
A milestone innovation that positively impacts society
In collaboration with our partners, AWS is proud of our role in developing this practical AI prototype that makes the world a more inclusive place for the visually impaired. Such innovation opens the door to broader applications, extending beyond comics to graphic novels, illustrated stories, and visual media of all kinds. This milestone also serves as a reminder that when technology is harnessed for inclusion, it doesn’t just create access—it creates belonging.
