Sebastien Buemi finished Free Practice 3 quickest for Envision Racing, in a session heavily disrupted by rain and red flags. Buemi set a time of 1m09.912s, but the rest of the grid weren’t able to try and improve on it as Lucas di Grassi suffered a big shunt in his Lola Yamaha ABT.
Taylor Barnard was second for NEOM McLaren, after he complained of traffic on some of his earlier laps with Oliver Rowland third for Nissan. The championship leader will need to serve a five-place grid penalty for today’s race, after causing a collision with Stoffel Vandoorne (Maserati MSG Racing) in yesterday’s event.
Nico Mueller was fourth for Andretti, with Maximilian Guenther fifth for DS PENSKE. The German is under investigation though for not respecting black and orange flags for a tyre pressure infraction.
As it happened…
The session was delayed by 15 minutes as a result of the rain, but cars were quick to head out once the session was given the green light. The track was slippery as expected, with championship leader Oliver Rowland fighting the conditions in his Nissan.
Mahindra Racing’s rookie stand-in, Felipe Drugovich, was looking rapid early on – setting a time a second quicker than anyone else. His teammate Edoardo Mortara then went quickest, but the session was brought to a stoppage.
An unsafe release from TAG Heuer Porsche for Antonio Felix da Costa brought out the red flags as the right rear tyre came off the car at Turn 10. He was brought back to the garage, as was his car which was undamaged in the incident, with the team quickly preparing the Porsche to get back out.
Unfortunately for da Costa, he never got a chance to set a lap in and finished the session in 22nd after another red flag was deployed for a heavy crash involving Lola Yamaha ABT’s Lucas di Grassi. The Season 3 champ went into the barrier in a big shunt that will have caused significant damage to the front of his car and the powertrain.
He was quick to jump out of the car, but the session wasn’t resumed with five minutes left on the clock.
