Bayern Munich have been blessed to have a catalogue of world-class managers along the years, including Hansi Flick, Pep Guardiola, Ottmar Hitzfeld and even “Don Carlo”.
There is however one name that holds an extremely special place in the hearts of Bayern fan’s and perhaps trumps all the aforementioned: Jupp Heynckes.
Focused on team spirit, tactical flexibility and player development, the legendary coach and former Bayern player was of course the first to deliver a treble to Munich in the 2012/13 season.
In an interview with German newspaper outlet, Welt am Sonntag, another legend of Die Roten and current supervisory board member, Karl-Heinz Rummenigge believes Vincent Kompany shares characteristics of Heynckes.
”After the time we had with Thomas Tuchel, he [Kompany] brought back the joy of playing and the trust in working with the team. I also like how Vincent presents himself in public. He reminds me of Jupp,” said Rummenigge (as captured by @iMiaSanMia).
The former Bayern CEO went on to share what it is that Kompany shares Jupp. “I often watched Jupp’s press conferences. Jupp was the world champion of ‘verbally administering Valium’”.
For anyone who doesn’t know (myself included as of two minutes ago), Valium is a medicine used to treat anxiety and relax muscles.
The ability to calm the players, fans and anyone involving the club was, according to Rummenigge, among Jupp Heynckes’ best abilities and believes Vincent Kompany shares the same ability to bring calm.
Ever stoic, Kompany always emphasises calmness even under the most severe pressure — of which he has had to endure several times in the past season.
One can, therefore, see how Rummenigge has likened Kompany to one of Bayern Munich’s best managers of all time.
Although, just for safety’s sake, Kompany should win the treble with Bayern just to drive home the resemblance between him and Heynckes.
