CM Maryam Nawaz Sharif orders crackdown on bird hazards near Lahore airports

In a decisive move to enhance aviation safety, Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has ordered a comprehensive operation to eliminate bird hazards in areas surrounding Lahore’s airports.

The initiative aims to prevent bird strikes, which pose serious threats to aircraft and passenger safety. Under the plan, specific zones around airports will be declared “no-bird zones,” with strict action against any activity that attracts bird flocks.

To implement the directive, the Chief Minister has mobilised the district administration, the Punjab Wildlife Department, and the Environmental Protection Authority. She has also directed Senior Provincial Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb to activate Punjab’s first dedicated Wildlife Force to carry out targeted enforcement.

The government has announced a crackdown on all illegal slaughterhouses and poultry farms operating near airports. In addition, businesses, particularly food outlets and bakeries in sensitive zones, will face strict regulation regarding garbage disposal to prevent bird congregation.

“No commercial activity that increases the risk of bird presence will be allowed near airports,” CM Maryam said. A formal notification has been issued, stating that poultry farms, bakeries, and slaughterhouses lacking proper environmental safeguards will be shut down.

The notification also mandates the proper disposal of animal hides and bans open dumping. Lidded garbage bins are now compulsory in areas near airports.

Furthermore, the government has outlawed rooftop grain scattering, pigeon breeding, and large-scale pigeon flying in residential areas. Feeding birds at temples and public places will be restricted, with violators to face action under the Punjab Wildlife Act. Wildlife Rangers have been ordered to commence operations immediately.
