Sumitomo Chemical Recognized as a 2024 CDP Supplier Engagement Leader for the Sixth Consecutive Year

Jul. 22, 2025

Sumitomo Chemical has been recognized as a 2024 CDP Supplier Engagement Leader. The Company has received the highest rating in the annual Supplier Engagement Assessment conducted by CDP, an international non-profit organization, for the sixth consecutive year.

Since 2017, CDP has evaluated companies on their efforts to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and mitigate climate-related risks throughout their supply chains, as well as their engagement and effective collaboration with suppliers. Of approximately 24,800 companies worldwide that disclosed information to CDP for the 2024 assessment, 1,394 companies have been recognized as Supplier Engagement Leaders.

In 2021, Sumitomo Chemical formulated and announced a grand design to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050, which lays out the Sumitomo Chemical Group’s policy and targets for GHG emissions reduction initiatives. It also set a reduction target to achieve by 2030 for Scope 3 (*1) indirect GHG emissions across the Company’s and major Group companies’ supply chains. As a result, Sumitomo Chemical once again received certification from the Science Based Targets (SBT)(*2) initiative that this new target meets the standard of “well-below 2°C.” (*3) In addition, it has also advanced climate change efforts through dialogue with its suppliers. For example, every year, Sumitomo Chemical provides presentations on the Group’s carbon neutrality initiatives to its major suppliers in Japan and requests their cooperation in reducing GHG emissions.

Sumitomo Chemical believes that these continued efforts have led to the recognition as a CDP Supplier Engagement Leader in the 2024 assessment. Encouraged by this credit, it will continue to strengthen collaborations with its suppliers to achieve carbon neutrality.

The Sumitomo Chemical Group will remain committed to helping achieve a sustainable society and achieving its own growth, and to meeting the expectations of all of its stakeholders.

(*1)   Indirect GHG emissions across the company’s supply chain, excluding Scope 1 emissions (direct emissions from the company itself that occur, for example, from fuel combustion and industrial processes) and Scope 2 emissions (indirect emissions attributable to power or steam purchased by the company and brought into its factories and other operations)
(*2)   The globally-shared long-term goal set out in the Paris Agreement, which aims to curb the increase in the global average temperature to less than 2°C above pre-industrial levels and pursue efforts to limit the temperature increase to 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels
(*3)   High-level targets for GHG emission reductions set by companies based on science in order to achieve the goals set out in the Paris Agreement
