Uber launched a Weixin Mini Program that allows Chinese travelers to book and pay for rides in global destinations directly through Weixin, China’s most popular messaging and social platform, known internationally as WeChat.
The feature makes Uber’s global ride-hailing service more accessible than ever to outbound Chinese travelers. It will first go live in Hong Kong SAR and Japan, and expand to nine more markets, including the US, UK, and France, in the coming months.
“By embedding Uber into Weixin, we’re making overseas travel easier for Chinese users at every step,” said Pradeep Parameswaran, Head of Mobility for Uber. “We want to meet riders wherever they are, and for Chinese international travellers, that means Weixin. Our new Mini Program will ensure a seamless experience, from searching to payment, through an app that Chinese users already trust and use every day.”
The Mini Program launch marks a milestone in Uber’s global growth strategy, underscoring its commitment to partnering with locally relevant, high-engagement platforms. There are 1.1 billion monthly active users of Weixin Mini Programs, which are lightweight apps within Weixin that let users shop, pay, and access other services without having to download a separate app.
Last year, over 130 million Chinese travelers went abroad, and that number is expected to grow even higher in 2025. They can now search, book, and pay for Uber rides through Weixin. The Mini Program supports Weixin Pay and is fully localized with a Chinese-language interface and familiar user flows. In Hong Kong SAR, it also supports WeChat Pay HK, a Hong Kong dollar e-wallet designed for local users.
“We welcome Uber to the Weixin Mini Program ecosystem, which offers seamless convenience for our users to travel worldwide,” said Freedom Li, President of Weixin Pay International Business. “We are dedicated to providing a ‘local-like’ digital convenience globally, and Uber’s integration strengthens Weixin’s cross-border digital ecosystem.”
