Swimming: Kaylee McKeown, Kyle Chalmers lead Aussie medal hunt

Kaylee McKeown and Kyle Chalmers will ensure there is no shortage of swimming firepower from Australia at the 2025 World Aquatics Championships in Singapore.

With Ariarne Titmus and Zac Stubblety-Cook missing the event through rest and an injury respectively, their presence is even more important.

McKeown, 24, is the two-time reigning women’s 100 and 200 backstroke Olympic gold medallist and a four-time individual long course world champion.

Following her astonishing five-medal performance at Paris 2024, the exhausted Queensland swimmer struggled to regain her motivation and took a break from the sport.

In Singapore, she will hope to repeat her 50-100-200 backstroke sweep from the 2023 World Championships, as well as taking part in the 4x100m mixed medley relay, and the 4×100 medley relay.

On the men’s side, Rio 2016 100m freestyle Olympic champion Chalmers has had his fair share of injuries over the years, but keeps turning up when it matters most.

Still only 27, the Port Lincoln native also sealed silver in the event at Tokyo 2020 and Paris 2024, with a first world title at Fukuoka 2023 in between.

Chalmers, who has also been a mainstay of the ultra-successful Dolphins’ relay efforts over the years, will compete in the 50 free, 100 free, 50 fly, 4×100 freestyle relay and likey the 4×100 medley relay.
