While a 30 FPS experience on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S is likely, PC players can expect a 60 FPS option later
California: As anticipation for Grand Theft Auto 6 (GTA 6) reaches a fever pitch, new reports suggest that Sony’s upcoming PlayStation 5 Pro console is poised to run the highly awaited title at a smooth 60 frames per second (FPS) from launch, regardless of graphics settings. This marks a significant potential leap in the console gaming experience for one of the industry’s most graphically demanding franchises.
According to reports, a collaborative effort between Sony and Rockstar Games, including optimisation via new technologies with PlayStation engineers, is expected to enable the PS5 Pro to achieve this steady 60 FPS performance. This would set a new benchmark for the series, as many previous GTA iterations on current-gen consoles have typically been capped at 30 FPS.
Overheating woes: Death Stranding 2 raises red flags for current-gen consoles
While the PS5 Pro looks set for a premium performance, the frame rate for the standard PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S consoles remains unconfirmed. A growing number of reports concerning Death Stranding 2: On the Beach have fueled anxieties regarding the ability of current-generation consoles to handle such graphically intensive titles.
Players of Kojima Productions’ recently released sequel have widely reported instances of their PS5 consoles overheating, particularly when accessing the in-game map screen. Users describe console fans going into overdrive, leading to overheating warnings, even on recently cleaned or brand-new systems. Speculation suggests that an uncapped frame rate in certain UI elements, like the map, might be pushing the consoles’ GPUs to their thermal limits. These issues with Death Stranding 2 have sparked concerns that GTA 6, with its notoriously expansive and detailed open world, could pose similar or even greater challenges for the base PS5 and Xbox Series X|S hardware.
Despite these performance anxieties, industry observers suggest that playing GTA 6 on existing consoles at a potential 30 FPS might not “significantly affect the gaming experience” for the majority of players, arguing for the continued relevance of the current-generation hardware.
Beyond console launch: The PC version and Indian market consideration
For those prioritising a definitive 60 FPS experience, the PC version of GTA 6 is expected to arrive approximately two years after its console debut, offering another pathway to higher frame rates and customizable graphics settings.
In the Indian market, the situation presents unique considerations. The PS5 Pro has not seen an official release in India, and even if acquired through third-party channels, its full potential, including the utilisation of the WiFi 7 band, may not be harnessed due to current infrastructure limitations. This means Indian users eyeing a guaranteed 60 FPS experience might need to consider options like purchasing the console from countries where it’s fully supported, or patiently waiting for the PC release.
