Production for The Devil Wears Prada 2 is well underway, we’ve just gotten our first peeks behind the cerulean curtain.
This week, Anne Hathaway took to Instagram to share some coy updates in character. In a combined post with 20th Century Studios captioned “Andy Sachs 2025,” Hathaway dons a vintage, pin-striped Jean-Paul Gaultier suit set. Her slouchy-chic sense of ease is a far cry from the frantic, earnestly frumpy version of Andy we first met in 2006—and an effective tease. We want to know exactly what this version of the character is up to.
The Devil Wears Prada is lauded as a cult-favorite fashion movie, but with its thematic focus on finding oneself in the right rooms, it’s also a visual feast with its decor. Throughout the original film, Andy’s style and persona evolve to better suit her sleek new settings. When the 20-something aspiring journalist lands a coveted job at Runway Magazine as second assistant to the renowned, ruthless editor-in-chief, Miranda Priestly, she realizes that she must assimilate to its exclusive culture in order to reap its career benefits.
Even if you fully support Andy’s ultimate decision to stay true to herself and leave the world of couture showings, comped Paris hotel suites, and free Chanel behind, the set-dressed glimpse of this environment was enough to make you want to stay a while. With The Devil Wears Prada 2 set to premiere on May 1, 2026 (per Variety,) we can’t wait to find our way back to a modern version of Runway. Here’s everything we know about the highly anticipated sequel.
Which original cast members are returning?
When Meryl Streep delivered the line, “The truth is, there is no one that can do what I do,” in the original film, she meant it: Streep will reprise her Oscar-nominated performance as the Prada-clad devil herself, Miranda Priestly. Stanley Tucci and Emily Blunt will also return as Nigel and Emily (former first assistant to Miranda).
Several sources have confirmed that Lucy Liu, Simone Ashley, Justin Theroux, and BJ Novak will also join the cast of The Devil Wears Prada 2, as well as Kenneth Branagh, who will reportedly play Miranda Priestly’s husband.
What’s the plot?
Official plot details are still under wraps, but fan theories about the film centering the rise of digital media—and the traditional magazine powerhouses’ response—seem to track. IMBd currently states that the storyline “Follows Miranda Priestly’s struggle against Emily Charlton, her former assistant turned rival executive, as they compete for advertising revenue amidst declining print media while Miranda nears retirement.”
In a 2022 interview on The View (as reported by Entertainment Weekly), Hathaway expressed doubt that a Devil Wears Prada sequel would even be possible, given how much its focal industry has evolved: “I just think that movie was in a different era,” she said. “Now, everything has gone so digital and that movie centered around the concept of producing a physical thing.” But the Miranda Priestly we’ve come to idolize wouldn’t surrender so easily, and we’re looking forward to seeing how she’s brought her iron rule into the digital age at Runway. (Although, we’re holding out hope that The Book hasn’t become an iPad, which simply won’t work on the table with the flowers.)
Where will we find our favorite characters this time?
The filming locations of the original Devil Wears Prada served up interiors that we’re still swooning over (and closely following in the New York City real estate scene) nearly 20 years later: Miranda Priestly’s seven-bedroom, Neo-Renaissance townhouse on the Upper East Side sold for $26.5 million in 2023, and the sweeping SoHo loft where Andy Sachs first met journo-playboy Christian Thompson was put on the market for $8.65 million this spring.
Apart from a few other work errands to urban landmarks, including the King Cole Bar at the St. Regis Hotel and the Musée Galliera in Paris, the bulk of the 2006 film takes place in the offices of the fictional Runway Magazine. These sets epitomized magazine culture of the early aughts in their design: glossy, tactile, and pure sounding boards for stilettos.
Streep, Tucci, and Hathaway (toting a Runway garment bag?!) have been spotted filming on the streets of NYC this week, but we’re still waiting for first glimpses inside the sets for The Devil Wears Prada 2. But we have no doubt that these beloved characters will find themselves in spaces that once again warrant the statement: “Everybody wants to be us.”
