Satwiksairaj Rankireddy-Chirag Shetty lose semi-finals as India’s campaign ends

India’s Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty suffered yet another semi-final exit after losing in the final four of the men’s doubles event at the China Open 2025 badminton tournament on Saturday.

Competing at the Olympic Sports Centre Gymnasium in Changzhou, the People’s Republic of China, Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty lost to two-time Olympic bronze medallists Soh Wooi Yik and Aaron Chia of Malaysia.

After failing produce much resistance in the first game, Satwik-Chirag, 12th in the men’s doubles badminton rankings, put on a fight in the second but couldn’t prevent a 21-13, 21-17 defeat in 42 minutes.

This was Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty’s 11th defeat in 14 matches against world No. 2 Soh Wooi Yik and Aaron Chia.

The Indian badminton players had also lost to the Malaysian duo in the quarter-finals of the Paris 2024 Olympics.

Satwik-Chirag’s semi-final exit at the China Open is the fourth time that the duo have failed to make it past the final four in the 2025 badminton season.

They previously made it to the semi-finals of the India, Singapore and Malaysia Opens earlier this year.

Satwik-Chirag’s ouster in the semi-finals brought an end to India’s campaign at the BWF Super 1000 tournament.

India’s challenge in the women’s singles draw ended after Unnati Hooda, who had beaten two-time Olympic medallist PV Sindhu in the second round, was ousted in the quarter-finals on Friday.

Meanwhile, India’s men’s singles campaign also ended early after HS Prannoy lost to sixth seed Chou Tien Chen of Chinese Taipei in the round of 16, while Paris 2024 semi-finalist Lakshya Sen was knocked out in the opening round on Tuesday.

India’s shuttlers will be seen in action next at the Macau Open, which begins on Tuesday.
