Windows will no longer BSOD your computer for playing Fortnite on it

Summary

  • Microsoft fixes a BSOD bug caused by Easy Anti-Cheat in Windows 11 24H2.
  • A safeguard hold that was preventing updates has been removed for eligible devices.
  • Update Windows and Easy Anti-Cheat to avoid BSOD issues while gaming.

Have you noticed your Windows 11 PC has been crashing with a BSOD more often than usual while playing games? There’s a good chance it’s because the game you’re playing uses Easy Anti-Cheat (EAC). Microsoft knew about the issue after it cropped up in Windows 11 24H2, but it hadn’t managed to work out a fix. It was working with Epic to get the job done, but the BSOD seemed to be quite elusive. Fortunately, it seems the battle has finally been won, as Microsoft has posted an update claiming victory over this annoying bug.

As spotted by Windows Latest, Microsoft has a page detailing the known issues with Windows 11 24H2. One of the issues, listed under the header “Some devices using Easy Anti-Cheat stop responding and receive a blue screen,” the company details the problem and what users can expect. Part of the resolution involved preventing computers with Easy Anti-Cheat installed from upgrading to Windows 11 24H2, leaving people on a previous build until Microsoft finds a fix.

Fortunately, as of two days ago, Microsoft has added some good news to this page:

Resolution: The safeguard hold has been removed as of July 24, 2025. Eligible devices without other safeguard holds can install Windows 11, version 24H2 via Windows Update. Some devices might display a warning indicating that an incompatible version of Easy Anti-Cheat is installed on the device and that it may be possible to update to it by launching and updating frequently-played games. Easy Anti-Cheat update availability depends on the game publisher. A confirmation will be requested in order to proceed with the Windows installation.

If you play games that use Easy Anti-Cheat and you’re either stuck on an earlier version or you’re plagued with BSODs, give your Windows and EAC an update. If Microsoft managed to get the problem fixed, it should be the end of your upgrading and gaming woes.

Did you put Fortnite aside while Microsoft worked on this issue? If so, there are a few things you may have missed out on which are worth catching up on. For example, one of our writers feels that Fortnite’s new Blitz Royale mode is the most fun shooter in years. That same writer also spent 100 hours recreating their high school in Fortnite, which is worth a look if you want to do something similar.
