UEFA Women’s Euro 2025 – Group stage sees record goal tally
Not only has this tournament broken records in the stands, it has also done so on the pitch. In a testament to the entertainment on display, no European Championship has seen more goals in the group stages (89) than the 2025 edition.
2022’s tally of 78 was comfortably surpassed, with each of the 16 nations scoring at least twice, while Group D enjoyed a healthy share of the goals with 29.
This record came as a result of several enthralling games, including Spain’s 6-2 thumping of Belgium – which equalled the record for the most goals scored in a single game (8) – while England’s rampant display in a 6-1 win over Wales saw six different players on the scoresheet, the most for any nation in a single game.
UEFA Women’s Euro 2025 – Riola Xhemaili sends Switzerland into raptures
Before this month, Switzerland had never made it past the group stages of a European Championship. Results elsewhere meant that a point was needed in their final match against Finland to ensure a place in the quarter-finals.
All looked to be going to plan up until the 80th minute, when Finland were awarded a penalty and Natalia Kuikka fired home, leaving the hosts with a mountain to climb heading into the final 10 minutes.
But, as the saying goes, mountains are there to be climbed —with 90+2 minutes on the clock, second-half substitute Riola Xhemaili provided the heroics to start a party at the Stade de Genève and across the nation. The last-gasp dramatics embodied what this tournament has been for the hosts, and indeed everyone: Never giving up.
