Team GB’s tennis star Emma Raducanu pushed past Romania’s Elena-Gabriela Ruse Monday (28 July) at the Canadian Open in Toronto, in a 6-2, 6-4 victory.
With the win, Raducanu, 22 and a former U.S. Open champion, advances to the round of 64.
In the opening set Monday, it took Raducanu a game or two to find her rhythm – forced to grind her way through two long games in her first two service games. She ultimately held her serve both times, taking the set to two-all.
That’s where she took control, breaking Ruse for 3-2 and following it up with a more comfortable hold for 4-2. Raducanu completed a string of four straight games to close out the set 6-2.
Both players settled into a rhythm in the second set after it looked like Raducanu might run away with it after an early break. Ruse broke back, however, and the set was on serve at four games apiece.
Raducanu then closed out the match, breaking Ruse for a second time in the set for a 5-4 lead. She held serve a final time for the victory.
Competition at the Canadian Open continues Tuesday (29 July).
