‘The Los Angeles Olympics are one of my goals’

Tadej Pogačar is gearing his future plans around LA 2028 after sealing a fourth Tour de France title.

The Slovenian reaffirmed his status as the best men’s road cyclist of his era after finishing more than four minutes ahead of rival Jonas Vingegaard in the general classification standings.

Pogacar adds 2025 glory to his Tour de France triumphs in 2020, 2021 and 2024, meaning he is one title away from the all-time record currently shared by four riders.

And though only 26, Pogacar discussed retirement after Sunday’s final stage – something he will only consider after the next Olympics in Los Angeles.

“I don’t think I’ll stop right away, but I also don’t see myself going on for much longer,” Pogačar told l’Equipe.

“The Los Angeles Olympics are one of my goals, which are three years from now. After that, I might start thinking about retirement, we’ll see.”

Pogacar won bronze in the road race at Tokyo 2020 but pulled out of Paris 2024 due to fatigue, and he admitted to being tired throughout the final week of this year’s Tour de France as well.

“Burnouts happen in a lot of sports, mental burnout, physical burnout,” he said. “I think cyclists are a bit too obsessed with training. We always try the hardest and everybody wants to train more and more.

“You see riders with fatigue too early in the season, the team needs you to race, race, race and you keep going and you never really recover. Burnouts happen all the time and it can happen to me as well.”
