Flash flood wreaks havoc in GB’s Ghizer District

GHIZER (Dunya News) – Rain-triggered flash flood caused widespread damage in in Gilgit-Baltistan’s Ghizer District, completely destroying 22 houses and 18 shops and partially damaging 42 houses, Dunya News reported on Thursday.

The flash flood damaged crops, orchards and forests spread over hundreds of acres of land. The floodwater diverted the course of Ghizer River in Gupis Khatam area while Gilgit-Chitral Road was destroyed due to river erosion. Road links to Phander Valley have been also cut off due to flash flood.

Flash flood has also caused destruction in Shigar area and erosion has raised concerns of damage to agricultural land while standing crops have also been destroyed. The flood-affected area has been declared calamity hit and a notification in this regard has also issued.

According to the notification, 35 areas across Gilgit-Baltistan have been declared calamity-hit zones. The districts declared calamity-hit include several areas of Gilgit, Nagar, Ghizer, Diamer, Skardu, Ghanche and Kharmang.
