The delayed 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN 2024), the men’s football competition reserved for players active in their countries’ domestic leagues, will kick off on Saturday, 2 August, and run until 30 August 2025.
The tournament will be staged across five venues in four cities spread across three co-hosting nations: Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda.
Originally scheduled for February 2025, the biennial competition was postponed by eight months on the eve of the final draw due to “inadequate infrastructure, including stadiums, training facilities, and hospitals” in the host countries.
This year’s tournament, the 8th edition, will feature a record-breaking 19 teams in the group stage, the largest in CHAN history, with the opening game scheduled for the Benjamin Mkapa Stadium in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, and the final set for the Moi International Sports Center in Nairobi, Kenya.
Teams are split into four groups (three with five teams, one with four), with the top two in each advancing to the quarter-finals.
Since the tournament’s inaugural edition in 2009, both the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and Morocco have lifted the trophy twice. The DRC secured titles in 2009 and 2016, while Morocco claimed back-to-back victories in 2018 and 2020. Tunisia, Libya, and reigning champions Senegal have each won the tournament once.
