ATC labels 50 PTI leaders as absconders

An anti-terrorism court (ATC) in Sargodha on Friday sentenced Muhammad Ismail to 25 years in prison for his role in the May 9 violent attack on the Mianwali Judicial Complex.

The verdict was announced by Judge Muhammad Naeem Sheikh in case number 349/23. The court found Ismail guilty of vandalism and arson during the attack.

The court also instructed the District Police Officer (DPO) Mianwali to arrest 51 absconding suspects, including Ahmed Khan Bhachar, Ahmed Chattha, and Bilal Ijaz, within one month.

Non-bailable arrest warrants had earlier been issued for PTI senior leader and National Assembly Opposition Leader Omar Ayub Khan, who remains at large. The court ordered that legal proceedings against him continue.

This development comes a day after a separate ruling by the Faisalabad ATC, where Judge Javed Iqbal Sheikh handed down sentences to multiple PTI leaders and workers in connection with three May 9 cases. Among those sentenced were Senate Opposition Leader Shibli Faraz, MNA Zartaj Gul, and Sahibzada Hamid Raza.

The court, however, acquitted 88 individuals, including senior PTI leaders Fawad Chaudhry, Zain Qureshi, and Khayal Kastro.
