Pathfinder’s “Abomination Vaults” Adventure Path Hits D&D Beyond

Pathfinder’s “Abomination Vaults” Adventure Path Hits D&D Beyond

Over the past few years, Dungeons & Dragons and Pathfinder have essentially become the Coke and Pepsi of fantasy TTRPGs. Both are incredibly similar, yet different enough in their own right that they have often stoked a bitter rivalry among fans. Which is why it’s surprising that the popular Pathfinder Abomination Vaults Adventure Path is now available on D&D Beyond.

The campaign updates Pathfinder’s rules for the new D&D 2024 system and introduces a sprawling campaign that blends high fantasy with a mega dungeon a touch of horror. So just what can players expect when Pathfinder and D&D collide? Below, we take a look at all the details.

What is a Pathfinder Adventure Path?

An Adventure Path is similar to a campaign in Dungeons & Dragons, with the exception that it is broken into multiple parts which, when linked together, form a complete story arc. In the past, Pathfinder publisher Paizo would often release monthly adventures as part of a larger Adventure Path and often included supplementary materials, including spoiler-free Player Guides, advice articles for GMs and even tie-in fiction.

Some of Pathfinder’s most popular Adventure Paths include Kingmaker, Fists of the Ruby Phoenix, Gatewalkers and Abomination Vaults, all of which were later collected and republished as complete hardcover editions, which in effect are almost identical to a traditional Dungeons & Dragons campaign book.

What is the original Pathfinder Abomination Vaults Adventure Path?

Abomination Vaults is an Adventure Path originally published by Paizo for Pathfinder Second Edition in 2021. It consists of three connected adventures: Ruins of Gauntlight, Hands of the Devil and Eyes of the Empty Death (all of which were later collected into a hardcover edition published in 2022). Abomination Vaults was so popular that it was later updated for the D&D 5e rules (under the SRD) and published in 2024.

When run concurrently, the three adventures take characters from levels 1 to 11. The story takes place on Golarion (the default campaign setting for Pathfinder) near a small coastal town on the Isle of Kortos. The action kicks off when a mysterious beam of blue light erupts from the ruined lighthouse known as Gauntlight, which heralds the return of dark forces. Abomination Vaults is widely regarded as one of the most accessible and well-crafted campaigns for Pathfinder 2e thanks to its use of classic dungeon crawls, solid narrative and elements of horror.

Notably, Abomination Vaults is also the basis for an upcoming, co-op action RPG video game of the same name slated for release on Steam.

What’s included in the D&D Beyond version of Abomination Vaults?

The Abomination Vaults Adventure Path on D&D Beyond is virtually identical in structure to the Pathfinder version and 5e update, with the exception that all of the content has been updated for the D&D 2024 rules. In addition it includes the following elements which are new to D&D Beyond.

  • 16 magic items
  • 6 spells
  • 92 monsters
  • 13 maps (which can integrate with the Maps VTT)
  • 13 non-magic items

How much is “Abomination Vaults” on D&D Beyond

The Abomination Vaults Adventure Path retails for $49.99 USD on D&D Beyond. Notably, this is comparable to what we’ve seen with other 3rd party D&D products and there’s a significant amount of content included.

It’s also worth noting that the Pathfinder 2e Abomination Vaults hardcover retails for $54.99 USD (with the PDF going for $38.99 USD) with the Abomination Vaults 5e hardcover retailing for $69.99 USD (with a PDF version going for $38.99). So what you’re really paying for with this updated version is the ability to import content into D&D Beyond.

Final Thoughts

It’s surprising to see Wizards of the Coast and Paizo bury the proverbial hatchet and release a Pathfinder product on D&D Beyond (something that likely would have been unheard of several years ago). It’s a win-win for both systems and the TTRPG industry as a whole, letting players experience one of the greatest Adventure Paths ever made.

Cameron Nichols is a Senior Editor who lives in Boston, Massachusetts, and has been playing D&D since the early 90s, when he was introduced by his older brother and cut his teeth on AD&D 2nd Edition. Since then he’s played virtually every RPG he could get his nerdy little mitts on (including a weird Goth phase in the early 2000s when he rocked Vampire: The Masquerade pretty hard). His favorite D&D campaign setting is the Forgotten Realms and his favorite character to play was a Half-Orc Barbarian named Grug (who was unfortunately devoured by a gelatinous cube).
