Thermal diagnostics of transformers refers to the process of assessing the thermal behavior and condition of power transformers by monitoring and analyzing temperature-related parameters. This helps in predicting faults, extend lifespan, reduce maintenance costs, and preventing unexpected failures.

 

Thermal diagnostics are crucial because-

  • overheating is one of the leading causes of transformer failure,
  • insulation ageing and degradation is strongly linked to temperature rise,
  • maintenance can be prioritized if status of cooling systems are known to maintenance teams.

We will also discuss the concept of dynamic rating of transformers. Thermal monitoring is a solution which enables dynamic rating of transformers. Dynamic rating allows the calculation of top oil and hot spot temperatures, considering the load and ambient temperature, to estimate and predict the maximum transformer rated power, under both steady state and transient state.
